U.S. Embassy in Armenia

2016-04-24 | Naregatsi Art Institute

The Naregatsi Art Institute and the U.S. Embassy in Armenia have been collaborating since 2009. In the result of this fruitful collaboration they carried out two projects:"Memorial Concert Dedicated to the Memory of Daniel Pearl" and the unique project "Along the Trails of the Armenian Orphans".

In 2013 Naregatsi Art Institute in collaboration with the Near East Foundation (NEF) and the U.S. Embassy implemented a unique project "Along the Trails of the Armenian Orphans" designed as a series of events which include a Documentary Exhibition featuring rare collection of photographs from the Rockefeller Archive Center of New York, taken by the Near East Relief in the period of 1915- 1929; screenings of documentary films touching upon the issue; and a memorial concert.

They were displayed at the National Gallery of Armenia, our center in Yerevan, and the Terchoonian Home Orphanage in Gyumri.

The book "Along the Trails of the Armenian Orphans" was published in 2013. It is the result of the joint efforts of the Naregatsi Art Institute, U.S. Embassy in Armenia and the Near East Foundation.

Towards the exhibition Naregatsi Art Institute, published an extensive archival photo album, which was donated free of charge to the guests present at the opening of the exhibition.

The 200 photos included in the album illustrate the amazing story of Near East Relief: an American-led humanitarian mission that saved hundreds of thousands of Armenian orphans following the 1915 atrocities in the Ottoman Empire.

Memorial Concert dedicated to the memory of Daniel Pearl (The US Embassy Democracy Commission Small Grants Program )

On October 26, 2009, Naregatsi Art Institute organized a concert dedicated to the memory of Daniel Pearl (the Wall Street Journal reporter) in the framework of the 8th Annual Daniel Pearl World Music Days. The “Paros” Chamber Choir performed a wide repertoire of music including songs by accomplished Armenian, Russian and American composers.
The US ambassador in Armenia Marie L.Yovanovitch and several representatives of the Embassy were present at the concert as well.

The concert organized in the scope of the Democracy Commission Small Grants Program was very significant, for by using the power of music we have reaffirmed once more our commitment to tolerance and humanity. The range of songs performed by the “Paros” choir is a testament to that. Due to our commitment to the physically challenged and our mission our organization has always paid particular attention to people with special needs and this concert has given an opportunity to the “Paros” choir to perform their songs to a large audience.

The audience was inspired and overjoyed with the sounds of the “Paros” Chamber Choir; the fact that most of the Choir’s members are disabled made the event even more profoundly symbolic. Music helps to promote tolerance and understanding as it inspires respect for differences.
