On April 24th,Naregatsi Art Institute commemorated the centennial of the Armenian Genocide through the spirit of the arts and honoured the 1.5 million innocent Armenians who were slaughtered by the Ottoman Turks in Western Armenia 100 years ago.
In 2003, NAI held its first event ever in New York on April 24th. Since then, we have continued faithfully commemorating in the same manner. This year, an exhibition featuring artist, Hayk Barseghyan's works based on the trials and tribulations of the Armenian people was unveiled.
The Paros Chamber Choir paid tribute through a remarkable performance, followed by the Naregatsi Ensemble (Artistic Director, Hovik Sahakyan) and the newly established Narek Choir (Choirmaster, Narine Davtyan) presenting excerpts from composer, Khachatur Avetisyan's "Oratorio" for the first time since Armenia became an independent country over 2 decades ago. As a symbol of rebirth, the event also featured the talented musicians of the 100 Beacons Project and the Duduk Ensemble of Metsamor Charles Aznavour Art School (Artistic Director, Zhirayr Harutyunyan). The evening was closed by an uplifting performance by Karin Traditional Song & Dance Ensemble under the sounds of young musician, Tatul Hambardzumian's pipe.
