Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide through the spirit of the arts

In 2009 “Naregatsi” Art Institute once again remembered the victims of Armenian Genocide with the traditional memorial ceremony titled “Commemoration through the Spirit of Art” by presenting the series of events which included different genres of art such as fine art, film, music and folklore. Through series of events “Naregatsi” Art Institute also remembered the massacres that took place in Adana in 1909.
Exhibition entitled “Adana-100” was opened at “Naregatsi” Art Institute on April 20th. Over 30 artists were participating at the exhibition presenting artworks in various genres and styles such as painting, sculpture, collage, embroidery, photographs, etc.

The documentary “Adana the Herald of Great Genocide” prepared by “Naregatsi” Art Institute was presented the same day. It included historical facts, archive records, historian’s opinions, comments and the memories of Makruhi Menemshyan from Adana about massacres of Armenians in April of 1909, which took place in Adana and other populated areas. Two days later the film was presented at the Armenian National Library. The exhibition was open till the 30th of April.

Evening of literature and music dedicated to the memory of victims of Armenian Genocide and Armenian famous poet Daniel Varoujan’s 125th birthday anniversary was presented on April 21st.
Films of S. Yordheym titled “They Call me Mother” and V. Chaldranayan's film “April” were presented on April 22nd.

Meeting with the French-Armenian photographer Baxdik Guyumjyan took place on the same day at "Naregatsi" Art Institute, who presented the exclusive facts, stories, comments and responses by foreignres about Great Armenian Genocide. During the event of April 23rd, which was part of “Commemoration through the Spirit of Art” series of events, special spirit and energy was brought to the evening by ethnographer Arusyak Sahakyan, who presented memorial concert that was an extraordinary way of having discussion with the listeners about the wealth and beauty of Armenian spirit, traditional way of thinking and our perception about Armenian Genocide. Mushegh Sahakyan, Seyran Avagyan and Garnik Yavryan presented songs about freedom and lost country during the evening. The series of events ended with the concert program on April 24th.

The participants were Shoghakat Ensemble, singer Mushegh Sahakyan , Aratta Ensemble”, Naregatsi Folk Instruments Youth Ensemble, Garni” Vocal Quintet and Paros Choir.
